Beresford’s squad moved determinedly down the passageway, hugging the wall in single file. They had left the marauding horde of undead things behind some time ago. The pursuing zombies had either been shot to shit, or simply outrun as their stiffened limbs struggled to keep up with Beresford’s men. Even so, the SBS men continued at a hurried pace; staying on mission, moving in the direction of Lab A-1.

Beresford knew they didn’t have much time left. They had to keep moving. Distractions, like the walking cadavers they had left behind, couldn’t be tolerated.

“It’s just a little further!” Reynolds reported.

Up ahead, Beresford registered the sound of muffled gunshots a short distance away.

Are members of the crew still alive? The security detail perhaps?

It didn’t matter. All of them—except for Craven, of course—were fully expendable.

“Prepare to breach!” Beresford told his men.

Stepping over the collapsed, bullet-riddled profiles of her former horde, the female zombie continued on alone, wandering down the otherwise empty corridor, in search of those black-clad men who had decimated her pack. With each stride, the zombie let out short, sharp, rasping breaths as if every one of them was a struggle.

The once-pretty female’s face had wasted away. The flesh deteriorating rapidly as it blistered under the effects of the virus. Every available bit of skin on her face was honeycombed in itching, angry orange pustules. All of which looked set to burst any minute now. Her face a patchwork of sickness. The only gaps present amongst the bulbous swellings were those set aside for her eyes, alongside the slits that were her mouth and nostrils. Several portions of her long, black hair had fallen out, leaving bald patches. Only once this shedding process was complete, however, would there be room enough for new cysts to form.
